Thousands of in-person conferences have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving many executives scrambling. Luckily, there are still several options to meet virtually including Zoom, Google Hangouts, and WebEx to name a few.
However, going virtual leaves many executives wondering how they will still make the same impact online vs in person. Is it as simple as re-ordering slides or does it take a whole new level of analysis? If you’re hosting a virtual event soon, we’ve compiled some tips to help you out:
Know your technology. Nothing’s worse than watching a speaker who doesn’t understand their presentation technology. This can cause lengthy delays and technical glitches. Before you present, be sure to do a run-through and plan for the worst. You never know what could happen the day-of.
To optimize your presentation, we recommend choosing the right background (avoiding messy or cluttered spaces), conducting a soundcheck, and keeping your energy level up.
Ditch the boring slides. If someone comes to a virtual conference, they want to see you speak, not sift through slides. If you do include slides, make sure they’re not too text-heavy. A good rule of thumb is to include a few bullet points outlining your main ideas and imagery. At the end of your presentation open the floor for questions and comments. You’ll be amazed at how many people came well prepared with intriguing questions to spark new ideas.
Evaluate, improve, repeat. Though it may feel awkward, it’s crucial to record yourself presenting and watch it back. This way, you’ll be able to pick out long pauses, unclear statements, and of course, all of those “ums” and “uhs.” After you’ve watched yourself, write down a plan on how you want to improve next time. Repeat this process and soon enough you’ll be a public speaking pro.
