The job market is rapidly changing in 2023 and is nothing like we’ve ever seen before. As the national inflation rate continues to slow, the job market is also slowing down and many large tech companies are forced to do reductions in force. There are also more retirements during the pandemic and a high level of work absenteeism that’s starting to catch up as the job market regains its balance.
Although navigating the job market is a bit rocky right now and this may be a tough year for new engineering grads, these tips help make the process smoother. With the right strategy, you’ll be able to switch jobs with ease and/or successfully enter the job market in 2023:
Consider moving within your company
While you are searching for your next role, you may find it difficult to lock in the same pay and benefits right now – so why not focus on moving up in the company you currently work for?
Even better, if you can secure a competitive offer at a new company, allow your current company to counter-offer. Be sure your company is in good economic standing before doing this to ensure the conversation goes smoothly.
Stay familiar with remote work
Remote work is here to stay, with Gallup predicting that 75% of remote-capable workers will be hybrid or fully remote for the long term. Hybrid work increased by the end of 2022 by 55% and is expected to remain steady.
If you don’t have a strong work-from-home setup with a comfortable chair, desk and equipment yet, now is the time to make the investment and start developing a healthy and productive day-to-day schedule.
Continue to network
Although networking looks a bit different in the modern day with the introduction of virtual events, it’s important to stay as connected as possible, especially if you are new to the engineering industry.
If you aren’t already signed up, be sure to secure your spot for upcoming 2023 events like the Annual Convention & Legislative Summit.
