Developing a great work ethic is important in any industry, but is especially important in engineering, where professionals often have a lot of autonomy and thus might face a temptation to ignore the fine points of building a strong work ethic. Here are some fail-proof steps:
Be professional. Professionalism includes demeanor, values and attitude. Be the person who is always prepared and shows up five minutes early. Do not participate in gossip, especially around co-workers or others, because it can undermine your credibility.
Avoid procrastinating. Make a list of what you want to accomplish every day, and avoid putting it off. Procrastination is unhealthy and will lead to uncompleted projects. With a little direction and motivation, you can break the procrastination habit — or avoid it in the first place.
Find a balance. Between work, hobbies, family and social activities, our lives can become hectic and overcrowded. If we work too much, we can become overwhelmed and start making mistakes. While work is important, don’t forget to relax and take some time for yourself. Take care of yourself by getting the proper sleep and nutrition.
Stay positive. Even if things aren’t going your way, strive to remain positive. Be friendly and easily approachable by your employer and coworkers. If all else fails, keep a smile on your face!
Be persistent. To be successful, you must be able to work at something for a long period of time. Persistence allows you to work harder and longer. Don’t give up!
