The engineering profession is constantly changing and evolving, making it important to keep up with current industry trends. Although you may have received your engineering degree, you don’t stop learning after college ends. Follow these tips to stay current:
Continue to pursue education and certifications. The national ACEC offers online classes and seminars. The PE Institute also is a great resource, with educational events, webinars and conferences.
Subscribe to trade journals. There is no better way to stay up-to-date with what is going on in our industry than to subscribe to daily trade journals. For engineers, ENR is one of the best resources. Take time out of your day to sit down and read what is going on in the engineering world — you will be a more well-rounded employee for it.
Engage in discussion boards. Don’t be afraid to start conversations and spark interest with those in your industry. Another great resource is LinkedIn, where you can post about your professional life and network with others.
Read the news. One thing you can do to become a well-rounded engineer is to read the news so you’re familiar with industry and governmental policy. If possible, find a beat reporter who covers the engineering industry trends and follow them religiously.
