2023 is approaching quickly, and many engineers and firm owners are setting new goals and milestones for the new year. Many firms are setting hefty goals this year, and the industry is about to see growth like it’s never seen before. Employment for software engineers will have risen by around 22% between 2020 and 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
2023 will bring a whole new set of challenges, especially with dispersing funding for new projects and filling new positions as companies grow and evolve. Check out these New Years Resolutions for engineers in 2023:
1. Continue Learning
Even the most senior engineers and engineer managers find a way to always be learning to help sharpen their skills and mentor up-and-coming engineers.
We recommend signing up to attend a few new networking efforts to get the new year started. Try registering for the 2023 Engineering in Excellence Awards to help showcase your best work to industry peers and potential employers. This event is one of the biggest ACEC Utah events of the year, so you won’t want to miss out.
Some other events to consider include the 2023 Annual ACEC Convention in June of 2023. Many attendees will be from the ENR 500 Top Design Firms with experience in power, water waste, transportation and more. Click here to register and secure your spot early.
2. Plan for upcoming promotions
If you feel like you’ve achieved your yearly goals and are on track for a promotion, 2023 is the time to make the jump.
Before the new year, try gathering data and information showing achieved milestones or successful projects over the year. It’ll be great to reflect on these projects during year-end reviews and make plans for next year. If you’d like, you can also schedule an extra meeting with your manager to cover your progress with your career trajectory.
3. Receive and give feedback
In order to continue growing in the engineering industry and prepare yourself for new projects, you’ll need to work on giving and receiving feedback.
Make it a habit of giving timely feedback that’s focused on a specific behavior or action, instead of an individual person. Reassure your peers and bosses that you’re open to feedback by scheduling regular meetings and asking questions for clarification.
2023 is also a great time to invest in an ACEC Utah membership because you’ll gain access to the latest industry knowledge and networking events. Visit our website to learn more and start planning your journey as a member of the ACEC organization.
