A work-life balance is important for all professionals in the engineering field because it promotes higher productivity, lower absenteeism, and improved motivation at work. Work-life balance is difficult, especially in a culture with high expected productivity levels on new projects. If you’re struggling to maintain a healthy work-life balance, you’re not alone. Studies have shown that up to 95% of people feel external pressure to overwork, and 50% of full-time employees work over 40 hours per week. Follow these tips to maintain the balance you’ve been craving:
1. Develop hobbies outside of work
Although many engineers enjoy their careers and devote extra time and energy to side projects, it is important to develop a hobby that gets you out of your desk chair to disconnect from work. Try creating a gym schedule or hobby and stick to it by eliminating all distractions and finding a buddy to complete the activity with.
If you live in a state with plenty of outdoor recreation, some hobbies to try are mountain biking and kayaking to help alleviate stress. Spending time in nature is proven to help relieve anxiety, improve mood, and boost happiness and well-being.
2. Restructure your work schedule
In an age of remote and hybrid work environments in the tech industry, it’s becoming common to restructure your work schedule to adjust to your current lifestyle. For example, some full-time workers enjoy doing four 10s and having a three-day weekend if their company allows it.
If you often work past the 5 p.m. mark, it’s important to re-organize your day by setting new goals that make your schedule more attainable. You can also try setting a timer that notifies you when the work day ends so you don’t risk working overtime unless necessary.
3. Promote healthy lifestyle choices
Since you spend 40 hours or more a week sitting in a chair, it’s important to take the extra time to make healthy lifestyle choices. Make sure you exercise daily before or after work, practice mindfulness, eat healthy and nutritious meals and drink plenty of water. If you feel tired, try adjusting your work schedule to include a mid-day nap once or twice a week and ensure you get 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
