Your first day on the job in the engineering industry is nerve-wracking, especially for a position that you’ve worked long and hard to receive. Congratulations on the new position, and we’re here to give you pointers to help you succeed.
Once you get past the initial stage of work badges, WiFi passwords and setting up your desk, you’ll be immediately introduced to your workload, The first month is a learning curve, so be sure to show grace to yourself and soak up everything you can from your managers and co-workers.
Spruce up your wardrobe
When you’re hired on a new job, you’ll want to look and dress the part, even if it’s a remote position. Depending on what field you’re in and if you’re expected to be on work sites or not, there is a specific dress code. If you need to get specific clothing or safety gear for the position, do that before your start date.
If you’re working remotely or in a hybrid position, be sure to look put together when taking Zoom calls and other conference meetings. We recommend slacks or khaki pants and a nice shirt like a polo, cardigan or sweater on more casual days and a sport coat or button-down shirt during more formal interviews.
Schedule a weekly 1:1 with your manager
Instead of waiting for your manager to take initiative, try booking a weekly meeting yourself or scheduling time to take your manager out to coffee. It’s crucial to start the relationship off on the right foot to ensure you can work well together for the foreseeable future.
Make sure to book the meeting at a time that’s convenient for both you and your manager, and stick to that time slot.
Set both short and long-term goals
During the first 30 days of employment, you may feel a bit lost and struggle to accomplish tasks that make you feel productive in the workplace. That’s why it’s crucial to set both short and long-term goals to help measure your progress.
Where do you see yourself in the next month? What are your goals for the next 10 years? Be sure to reflect on these questions and take notes.
