COVID-19 has changed the way we work and collaborate. Work-from-home and hybrid models have become increasingly more common for thousands of workers across the nation.
Although many in the engineering industry enjoy the increased flexibility, it takes a lot more effort to collaborate and stay in touch with coworkers. These new work models are here to stay as we learn to live with COVID-19, so it’s crucial to develop healthy work habits that allow you to stay independent while focusing on innovating new ideas with others. Follow these tips to help increase collaboration during the COVID-19 era.
Take advantage of conferences and networking events
Attending regular conferences and networking events is the best way to consistently stay in touch with co-workers and meet new people in your industry. If you’re in the market for a new job or want to increase your skills in a specific area, these events are a great way to network and learn from professionals in your field.
We encourage all ACEC Utah members to check out the latest ACEC events happening this year. For those who are hesitant to attend in-person events, virtual options are available. Be sure to take advantage of these virtual options – it’s a great way to expand your knowledge without having to travel long distances.
Encourage creativity
The world has gone through multiple global crises since 2020, and as a result of this, creativity has suffered. It’s difficult for many to be creative during major lifestyle changes that can lead to a decline in mental health.
Even if you’re working from home, schedule meetings through Zoom and Google Meet to check in with coworkers and bounce new ideas around. Although it may not be a face-to-face conversation, you’ll still feel a sense and motivation of belonging that every worker needs.
Explore new projects
With many economic changes in the U.S., including the new infrastructure bill and the impacts of the crisis in Ukraine, there’s no lack of new projects available and thousands of new problems to solve. If you’re feeling bored or unchallenged in your current position, now is the time to explore new projects that challenge your brain and leave you fulfilled.
As you tackle new projects and problems with your co-workers, be sure to ask for feedback often and listen to the opinions of other engineers in your department.
