Leadership is one of those skills that makes a person extra valuable in the workplace, but that many people, including engineers whose strengths lie on the technical side, do not know how to cultivate. Here are a few tips to become a better leader:
Communication is key. Successful leaders are generally effective communicators. Becoming an effective communicator is easier said than done, though. First, make sure your message is always understood. Don’t shy away from repeating the most important points of your message several times. Follow up with your colleagues to ask if they understand your message or have any questions. Although you may be speaking often, don’t forget to actively listen. By listening deeply, you can formulate the best response.
Take responsibility. Don’t be afraid to own up to your mistakes. Some of the worst mistakes contribute to character building. If you have contributed to any part of a project, you must take responsibility if it fails.
Find a unique voice. Develop your own taste and style as a leader and communicator. Don’t follow what others have done; people are more eager to follow someone who is authentic. Always strive to remain professional, but also memorable.
Encourage feedback. Create a policy that allows employees to give you constant feedback. If the feedback is not always positive, don’t take it personally. Use feedback as a way to improve the way you run things. Let your employees or colleagues know your door is always open if they have concerns or just want to talk.
Consider your own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. Nobody is perfect. Assign tasks with an employee’s strengths in mind to reach peak productivity. If you are feeling overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to ask others who are more experienced in the field for help.
