At ACEC Utah, we host networking and mentoring events every month. Even so, we find that sometimes our members leave these conferences without new contacts, job leads, or general information on how they can make their careers better. This is a problem worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic because most events went virtual. How can you connect with someone behind a screen instead of in person?
If you want to get the most out of your next networking event, follow these tips:
Connect with people authentically
This one can be challenging. It’s important to come to a networking event (whether digital or in-person) with a script. A 30-second “elevator pitch” that sells your education, skills, and experience. Even if you’ve prepared in advance, it’s normal to feel nervous. Take deep breathes and try to be yourself.
We suggest sharing a fun fact or skill with others during your initial introduction. Once you’ve talked for a bit and established a good flow, you can ask to connect via LinkedIn, email, or with a traditional business card.
Find joy in virtual events
Although many despise virtual events (how awkward is it to accidentally talk over someone during a Zoom conference?), it’s your job to find joy in the unknown. If the event is virtual, you’ll likely get an attendee list ahead of time, giving you plenty of time to research new people and decide who you want to start a conversation with and why.
If you’re presenting at a virtual conference, another advantage is that you can show videos and links to relevant articles as you speak. You can even answer questions using the Chat feature.
Start taking advantage of mentorship programs
If you’re unsatisfied with your current career path and want to learn something new, it’s time to start connecting with a mentor to find your spark. Most earth-shattering innovators started out in a mentorship program where they found their passion and spread their wings in the professional world. This type of development could, without a doubt, happen to you. So don’t wait to start!
