While networking events may seem intimidating at first, they are a great way to connect with professionals in your field. If you choose to become a member of ACEC Utah, you will have the opportunity to attend several networking events each year. Here’s how to make the most out of your experience:
Study up. Prior to attending the networking event, be sure to study up to improve your overall experience. Additionally, think deeply about what you want to gain from the event and who you want to connect with in order to avoid wasting your time and money.
Dress appropriately. Networking events are all about first impressions and you want to look your best! A safe bet is to always dress professionally and act well-mannered when attending a networking event. Don’t forget to bring business cards. You never know who you might meet — and later interview with for that next career move.
Get out of your comfort zone. When attending a large networking event, it may be easy to stick with the same group you know. Don’t be afraid to branch out and talk with people from other companies. The best way to improve as an engineer is to put yourself out there and find new tips and tricks.
Practice your introduction. Before you attend a networking event, be sure to have a 20- to 30- second introduction about yourself prepared. You want to be able to introduce yourself to several people in a short amount of time, so be sure your introduction is clear, concise and relevant. Don’t be afraid to make eye contact and give a firm handshake.
