Networking events are crucial to keeping up with industry news and setting yourself apart from the competition. If you are planning on attending a large networking event with other professionals in your field, it may be difficult to stand out from the crowd. If you are nervous or dreading your next networking event, consider following these tips below:

Put your phone away

While long lectures and boring PowerPoint presentations may make it tempting to spend the majority of the time on your mobile device, try your best to resist this temptation. Instead of texting your friends or catching up on Instagram, redirect your energy toward connecting with others. The best way to look approachable is to smile and make eye contact with others instead of hunching over a screen.

Do your research

It is important to research the guest speakers and panel members before attending a networking event. The majority of the time the speaking themes will be released prior to the event and you will have time to digest the information and think of a few relevant questions. If there is something you want to know about the panelist, don’t hesitate to ask. Now is the time to seize the moment and get your questions answered. When you stand up to ask your question, be sure to stand tall and make eye contact.

Assume people already like you

The best thing you can do at a networking event is to show up with a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Instead of being insecure and shy, focus on what you can offer to the new friends you are about to meet. Change your mindset from “they will never like me” to “I’m likable.”
