Twenty-five ways to be a top engineer

Let’s face it, engineering is a competitive industry full of young, talented individuals. If you are an engineer or part of ACEC Utah, here are some tips to get a leg up on the competition:

1. Be the first to jump on site experience
2. Take applicable courses
3. Read plenty of books
4. Ask questions
5. Find a mentor
6. Volunteer for something you are passionate about
7. Fix your mistakes
8. Make public safety your priority
9. Create a mission statement and swear by it
10. Work on your leadership skills
11. Validate your findings
12. Dress professionally in and out of the office
13. Be open to teaching students going into the field
14. Take safety rules seriously on site
15. Learn how to take criticism
16. Always have your work reviewed
17. Know your company’s policies
